Download PDFAbstract: Viral videos can reach global penetration traveling through internationalchannels of communication similarly to real diseases starting from awell-localized source. In past centuries, disease fronts propagated in aconcentric spatial fashion from the the source of the outbreak via the shortrange human contact network. The emergence of long-distance air-travel changedthese ancient patterns. However, recently, Brockmann and Helbing have shownthat concentric propagation waves can be reinstated if propagation time anddistance is measured in the flight-time and travel volume weighted underlyingair-travel network. Here, we adopt this method for the analysis of viral memepropagation in Twitter messages, and define a similar weighted network distancein the communication network connecting countries and states of the World. Werecover a wave-like behavior on average and assess the randomizing effect ofnon-locality of spreading. We show that similar result can be recovered fromGoogle Trends data as well.

If The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, Psy‘s “Gangnam” electro-guarachero remix by Meke Trefe ft. Alan Rosales is like being bigger than 9/11. It finally happened. This is the best thing to ever happen to me. Psy, or GOD as he’s known in most households, a South Korean rapper just hit No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100. I wish I could show you with a chart, but Billboard never really counted as a chart that makes any sense, so I’ll break it down to four steps instead:
Step 1
Make a song in Garageband that starts off like black female power R&B jams from the ’90s. In fact, just take one that already exists.
Step 2
Then find William Hung or a Filipino look-a-like off Craigslist who has just been released from prison for cannibalism in a foreign country while dressing like a really gay Elvis.
Step 3
Make it weird. The kind of weird that is similar to being covered in extravagant futuristic Christmas ornaments and electric duct tape, except while doing something really mundane like ahhhh leaning against the kitchen sink and eating a cup of pudding in a cluttered railroad apt.
Step 4
Apply trends and always remember to keep it current with basic math.
As you can see WEIRD = COOL
But Psy’s “Gangnam” electro-guarachero remix by Meke Trefe ft. Alan Rosales just made WEIRD = UNCOOL by overdoing COOL and hitting No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 to be POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL, which is apparently still COOL in our time, or so we thought…
…pretty much, UNCOOL = POPULAR
But POPULAR = SUCCESSFUL
Which means because of Psy, POPULAR + SUCCESSFUL = UNCOOL
The rule of opposites applies therefore UNPOPULAR + UNSUCCESSFUL = COOL
WHICH REVERSES EVERYTHING IN TIME AND NOW WE HAVE TO GO BACK AND REWRITE THE HISTORY OF POP CULTURE.
“On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby I’m a man who knows a thing or two” A thing? Psy knows a thing. Or TWO he claims. I ask myself, “What is this? Who am I? What is life?
In a way, this is the most serene, insightful piece of music ever written. It’s so so GLORIOUS we wonder what music even is and decide to be involved with LAW to stop novelty from stealing our souls instead.
The point is, I do like what Meke Trefe and Alan Rosales have done for what popular, successful, and cool means, that is by joining forces to remix a hard-pounding, electro-guarachero take on Psy’s “Gangnam.”
